This cozy banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts is the ultimate comfort food. Browned butter adds a nutty depth, while melted chocolate and toasted walnuts create a perfect balance of flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3 large ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup plain full-fat yogurt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides. Lightly grease exposed ends.
  2. Brown the butter: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter. Swirl occasionally until it turns golden amber and smells nutty, about 4-5 minutes. Immediately pour into a medium bowl to stop cooking. Let cool 5 minutes.
  3. Toast walnuts in the same saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Transfer to a plate to cool.
  4. In a large bowl, mash bananas with a fork until mostly smooth with a few lumps.
  5. Add browned butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, and yogurt to the bananas. Whisk until smooth.
  6. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  7. Pour dry ingredients into wet mixture. Fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined (a few lumps are fine).
  8. Fold in chocolate chips and toasted walnuts, reserving a small handful for topping.
  9. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips and walnuts on top, pressing in slightly.
  10. Bake for 55-65 minutes, tenting with foil at 30 minutes if top browns too quickly. Bread is done when a toothpick inserted in center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  11. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes, then lift out using parchment sling and cool completely on rack (at least 1 hour).

Notes

Use very ripe bananas (brown spots or black skins) for best sweetness. Brown the butter carefully—it burns quickly. Do not overmix the batter. For best results, let the bread cool completely before slicing. The bread is even better on day two.
