A warm, aromatic mulled wine made in the slow cooker with red wine, maple syrup, orange juice, and a blend of spices. Perfect for holiday gatherings and cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/4 cup brandy or dark rum (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 whole allspice berries
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1 piece fresh ginger (about 2 inches), sliced into rounds
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds (for garnish)
  • Extra cinnamon sticks for stirring (optional)
  • Fresh cranberries, a handful (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spices and fruit: slice ginger into thin rounds (no need to peel), slice orange into 1/4-inch rounds.
  2. Combine everything in the slow cooker: pour wine, add maple syrup, orange juice, brandy (if using), cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, allspice berries, peppercorns, and ginger slices. Stir gently.
  3. Float orange slices on top. Add cranberries if using.
  4. Set slow cooker to low and cook for 2-3 hours. Do not use high setting.
  5. Check flavor after 2 hours. Adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  6. Strain spices using a fine-mesh strainer or slotted spoon before serving.
  7. Serve warm in mugs, garnished with fresh orange slice and cinnamon stick.

Notes

Do not let the wine boil. Keep on low heat. Strain before serving to avoid biting into whole spices. Can be made ahead and reheated. Non-alcoholic version: substitute wine with 4 cups grape juice and 2 cups apple cider, omit brandy.
