A warm and comforting fall drink combining apple cider, dry white wine, cranberries, and warming spices like cinnamon and cloves. Perfect for chilly days and festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) fresh, unfiltered apple cider
  • 2 cups (480 ml) dry white wine (Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio recommended)
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 56 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise pods (optional)
  • 1 medium orange, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) brandy or bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour 4 cups of apple cider into a large pitcher.
  2. Add 3 cinnamon sticks, 5-6 whole cloves, and star anise pods if using. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Let the mixture sit for at least 10 minutes to steep, or cover and refrigerate up to 2 hours for a deeper infusion.
  4. Thinly slice 1 medium orange and add the slices along with 1 cup of cranberries to the cider mixture.
  5. Stir in 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
  6. Pour in 2 cups of dry white wine and 1/4 cup brandy or bourbon if using. Stir gently to combine without bruising the fruit.
  7. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably longer, to allow flavors to meld.
  8. Before serving, give the sangria a gentle stir. Optionally remove the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise pods using a strainer or tongs.
  9. Serve over ice in glasses, garnished with extra fresh cranberries or an orange slice.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, replace white wine and brandy with additional apple cider or sparkling apple juice. Use whole spices to avoid gritty texture. Chill for at least 1 hour for best flavor. Consume within 24 hours to avoid bitterness from citrus and breakdown of cranberries.
