This easy homemade cranberry orange sauce with rosemary is bright, tart, and perfectly balanced. It comes together in under 20 minutes on the stovetop and is the perfect holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340g) fresh cranberries
  • 1 large navel or Valencia orange (zest and juice)
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary (about 4–5 inches)
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) pure maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prep your orange: Wash the orange thoroughly. Zest the entire orange using a microplane (about 1 tablespoon of zest). Cut the orange in half and juice it (about 1/4 cup of juice). Set both aside.
  2. Combine sugar and water: In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add cranberries and rosemary: Add the fresh cranberries and the whole sprig of rosemary. Stir gently.
  4. Bring to a boil: Increase heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Let it boil for about 1 minute, then reduce heat to medium-low.
  5. Simmer and stir: Let the sauce simmer gently, stirring occasionally. After about 8 minutes, stir in the orange zest, orange juice, and maple syrup. Continue simmering for another 3-4 minutes until the sauce coats the back of a spoon but is still slightly loose.
  6. Remove rosemary and cool: Remove the saucepan from heat. Remove the rosemary sprig. Let the sauce cool in the pan for about 5 minutes.
  7. Transfer and chill: Pour the sauce into a serving bowl or storage container. Let it come to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Don’t overcook the sauce; it will thicken as it cools. Keep the rosemary whole for easy removal. Zest the orange before juicing. Use a heavy-bottomed pan to prevent scorching. Adjust sweetness to taste. The sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance.
