A lighter twist on the classic Halloween appetizer, featuring chicken sausages wrapped in flaky puff pastry with a creamy mustard dip. Perfect for parties and nostalgic fun without the guilt.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 12 fully cooked chicken sausages or lean turkey hot dogs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
  • 12 small candy eyes or olive slices
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Cut into 12 even strips, each about 3/4 inch wide.
  3. Take one sausage and wrap a pastry strip around it, leaving a small gap near the top for the face. Press the end gently to seal. Repeat with all 12 sausages.
  4. In a small bowl, beat the egg with a teaspoon of water. Lightly brush each wrapped sausage with the egg wash.
  5. Sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds over the top (optional).
  6. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. Internal temperature of sausages should reach 165°F (74°C).
  7. Let the mummies cool for 2-3 minutes. Attach candy eyes or olive slices to the exposed sausage using a tiny dab of mustard or a toothpick.
  8. While the mummies are baking, whisk together Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, whole-grain mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and smoked paprika in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  9. Serve warm with the dip in the center.

Notes

For best results, keep the pastry cold and work quickly. The dip can be made a day ahead and improves overnight. To reheat leftovers, use a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes; avoid the microwave.
