This Spooky Candy Apple Halloween Cocktail captures the nostalgic flavor of a county fair candy apple in a grown-up, sippable drink. With a dramatic caramel and candy melt rim, it’s quick to make, perfect for Halloween parties, and guaranteed to impress.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces apple cider
  • 1.5 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 1 tablespoon caramel sauce (plus extra for rimming)
  • 1 ounce heavy cream
  • Red candy melts (for the glass rim)
  • Black sanding sugar (for garnish)
  • Ice cubes
  • Wooden skewers or pretzel sticks (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the glass rim: Melt about a quarter cup of red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until completely smooth (about 60-80 seconds total).
  2. Dip the glass rim: Hold your glass upside down and carefully dip the rim into the melted candy melts. Rotate gently to get an even coating. Let the excess drip off for a few seconds. Place the glass upright on parchment paper or a plate. Let the candy coating set for about 5 minutes until firm but still slightly tacky.
  3. Add the caramel rim: Warm your caramel sauce for about 10 seconds in the microwave so it’s pourable. Dip the rim of the glass into the caramel, covering the candy coating. Let the caramel drip down the sides of the glass slightly. Let the caramel set for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Apply the black sanding sugar: Pour a thin layer of black sanding sugar onto a small plate. Gently roll the caramel-coated rim in the sugar, pressing lightly so it sticks. Tap off any excess.
  5. Fill the glass with ice: Add 4-5 ice cubes to your prepared glass.
  6. Mix the cocktail: In a separate small glass or measuring cup, combine 2 ounces of apple cider, 1.5 ounces of vanilla vodka, 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce, and 1 ounce of heavy cream. Stir gently until the caramel is fully incorporated.
  7. Pour and serve: Slowly pour the mixture over the ice. Garnish with a wooden skewer or pretzel stick if desired.
  8. Enjoy immediately: This cocktail is best drunk within 10-15 minutes of making it.

Notes

Don’t rush the rim-setting steps. The candy melt base needs to be just slightly tacky for the caramel to grab onto. Chill your glass beforehand for a cleaner rim line. For a non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with apple cider and add a splash of vanilla extract. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat coconut cream or oat milk creamer and a dairy-free caramel sauce.
